Vehicle Approval

Hello,

There are various routes manufacturers can take to obtain type approval for vehicles. I aim to cover as many as possible in this post to try help you decide which route is best for you. I will write this from the viewpoint of a UK manufacturer.

GB Small Series Type Approval (GBSSTA) formally National Small Series Type Approval (NSSTA)

These approvals have a limited amount of vehicles that can be produced each year Between 250 and 500 depending on what category the vehicles are. These can only be used for vehicles registered in Great Britain (not Northern Ireland).

GB Medium Series Type Approval (GBMSTA)

These approvals are only available on M1 and N1 vehicles. But 1500 units can be produced each year. These can only be used for vehicles registered in Great Britain (not Northern Ireland).

GB Whole Vehicle Type Approval (GBWVTA)

Available for M,N and O category vehicles. Allows an unlimited number of vehicles to be produced. These can only be used for vehicles registered in Great Britain (not Northern Ireland).

UK(NI) Small Series Type Approval (UK(NI)SSTA)

The same volume limits apply 250-500 per year depending on category. Allows the registering of vehicles in Northern Ireland as well as GB. This requires the manufacturer to have a NI representative.

UK(NI) Whole Vehicle Type Approval (UK(NI)WVTA)

Allows an unlimited number of vehicles to be produced. Allows the registering of vehicles in Northern Ireland as well as GB. This requires the manufacturer to have a NI representative.

UNECE Type Approval

This allows the registering of vehicles in any EU member state. Since Brexit this does not allow the registering of vehicles into Great Britain. There is a process in place currently to convert UNECE approvals into provisional GB approvals. Currently the provisional approvals will expire on the 1st of February 2024 for (M1 and N1 vehicles). After this date you will need to have a GBWVTA as well as a UNECE approval to sell into GB.
